Event Description
He Lani Ko Luna, A Sky Above
“In losing the sight of land, you discover the stars.”
by Kālepa Baybayan, Master Navigator, Imiloa Astronomy Center
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) will host its 2015 General Assembly from August 3 to 14 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. The triennial conference will welcome over 2,500 astronomers from 75 countries around the globe to the General Assembly and will also offer several free community events to the general public.
Join the IAU for a special public talk with Kālepa Baybayan, Pwo (master) navigator from Imiloa Astronomy Center and the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Baybayan’s talk, which is titled He Lani Ko Luna, A Sky Above, will share the history of deep sea voyaging, exploration, oceanic wayfinding and the indigenous system of orientation and navigation at sea. The presentation will also share efforts to use these experiences to revitalize a once dynamic maritime culture using education through a native world view, the Hawaiian language, and exploration of the symbiotic relationship between land, sea, sky, and people.
A FREE ticket is required for this event as capacity is limited.
Convention center parking is $10, or please take TheBus!
